The Great British seaside – out of season

By David Wheeler

WE KEEP hearing reports in the press of how British Seaside Resorts are becoming rundown and no one visiting them – but I had a wonderful three days by the sea in Whitby.

Once the schools go back, there are some great bargains to be had and for short stays, including weekends, Whitby has it all.P23 Whitby 2

The range of accommodation is endless with hotels, B&Bs and cottages to rent. Westayed in a converted boathouse in the harbour, which provided an excellent base to explore and travel.

Once in Whitby the possibilities of things to do are endless. The walk to Sandsend to visit one of the tea rooms is an excellent way to take a bracing walk.

One I recently undertook was to take the bus to Robin Hood’s Bay and walk back toWhitby via the cliff path. At low tide it is possible to see the wrecks of ships on the rocks below.

And while in Robin Hoods Bay why not take a walk along the beach and do some fossil hunting. A must is to walk up the famous 199 steps to the now ruined Whitby Abbey.P23 Whitby 1

If you prefer something less energetic, a walk round Whitby itself watching the boats going to and from the sea and seeing the swing bridge in operation is always a sight.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs an excellent service, sometimes with steam engines, into Whitby and then you are free to explore further.

Kids also have plenty to do and one of the most popular pastimes is catching crabs from the many jetties.

Whitby is of course famous for the setting of Dracula and if you go to the tourist information you can obtain details of the many ghost walks that are held after night fall.

After all this exercise, you can tuck into Whitby’s famous fish and chips – no one can tell you just how many fish and chip shops there are but there’s plenty! There are lots of other excellent choices of food and the seafood is second to none.

Whatever you choose to do at Whitby, the area is very much alive even out of season and it is a great place for both young and old.
