Three generations help popular Uppermill clothes shop celebrate 21 years

THREE GENERATIONS of a family are keeping business booming at a popular Uppermill clothes shop which celebrated its 21st birthday in March.

Deborah Bradbury, 49, threw open the doors of Pause A Second just over two decades ago to bring stylish lifestyle clothing and footwear to the village high street.

With her mum Norma and now daughter Hannah who works at weekends, they are busier than ever as they celebrate their landmark anniversary.

“I used to work in wholesale, then started doing clothes parties,” explained Deborah. “I had a shop in Newhey for six years then moved to Uppermill and it’s just progressed from there.

“Uppermill is a really vibrant place with all the independent businesses and a great spot for the new ones that keep opening.”

Pause A Second is stocked from floor to ceiling with clothes and footwear for ladies, men and children, from t-shirts and trousers to scarves and hats and all-year-round wellies.

Deborah picks out popular trends and also stocks top brand names including Skechers, Joules, Seasalt clothing, Hunters, Bogs wellies, Josef Seibel and fitflops.

“I listen to what the customers want and I can change things as I want, depending on what is popular, currently selling well or to add something new I’ve seen,” she explained.

“I have got the most fabulous customers, some who have kept coming back since the day I opened. My door is always open and the kettle is always on.

“Now we’ll just keep on going and hopefully be here for a long time still. But I do need to concentrate more on my website and social media and expand that side of things.”

Norma, settled on her famous red buffet, added: “This is a place where we look out for people, welcome them in and enjoy a chat – but what is said in the shop stays in the shop!”

There is another big celebration for the family this year when Norma 70 but rather than gifts she is going to be raising money for The Christie with a raffle and tombola.
