Top award for young Delph Primary School brass banders

TALENTED YOUNG brass players at Delph Primary School should be blowing their own trumpets after scooping a prestigious award.

The band, which features pupils from year 2 through to year 6, won the Martyn Evans Shield for their outstanding brass band performance at the recent Oldham Schools’ Music Festival.

The annual competition at the Queen Elizabeth Hall sees bands from both primary and secondary schools across the borough compete for a number of top awards.

Delph Primary’s brass band, who rehearse every week with Duncan Byers from Oldham Music Service, played a programme of four pieces to impress the judges.

Alison Leigh, headteacher at Delph Primary School, said: “We enter our band every year and we’re incredibly proud to win this award.

“Some of the pupils have only been playing in the band since September but they all are really very good!”
