Treats galore all year round at Grandpa Greene’s

ICE-CREAM lovers can feast on their favourite flavours and seasonal specials all year round as a popular family business in Diggle has flourished into a full-time café.

Grandpa Greene’s was set up in 2009 by Carole Scholes to sell delicious hand-made luxury ice-creams from her canal-side cabin on Ward Lane just off Huddersfield Road.

Soon established as a firm favourite with locals, the business has developed each year and will be open this winter for the first time thanks to their new indoor ice cream cabin.

Built in February, the new area with a roaring fire offers inside seating alongside the two large outside seated areas overlooking the canal, ensuring customers can enjoy Grandpa Greene’s every day from 10am to 6pm in all seasons.

The café has also extended its range of drinks and snacks and now serves a tasty array including sandwiches, cakes, paninis, bacon baps, coffees, milkshakes, beer, and wine.

Carole’s son Rick, 22, has been the driving the development since graduating from university in May 2013 and clinched ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the ONE Oldham Business Awards this year for his efforts.

He explained: “Year on year we have expanded and in February we built the new café section.

“We used to close over the winter but now we don’t have to and it will be much better for business. We had a really busy summer and we don’t want that to stop.

“We’ve had great feedback so far about the inside cabin but we haven’t really had a chance to test it properly yet as people have been sitting outside as the weather has been nice.”

Customers can choose from a mouth-watering range of ice-cream flavours, all lovingly home-made by Carole and Rick with local products from Dobcross.

Flavours range from the usual chocolate, strawberry and vanilla to specials including ‘Simply Saddleworth’, American Cheesecake, Baileys, bubblegum, lemon meringue, mango and ginger, rhubarb crumble and Grandma’s Apple Pie.

And a host of Christmas flavours will be unveiled at their taster day on Sunday, December 7, along with complimentary gluvine.

All these can be enjoyed in your own home too as Grandpa Greene’s sells ice-cream tubs perfect for storage in your freezer – with special deals including three one-litre tubs for £10.

The company now also proudly owns a second van which can be spotted around the area sharing Grandpa Greene’s ice-creams at local fairs, festivals and events.
