REOPENING: Spar on Uppermill’s High Street

The sudden closure last September of the Spar store, which had occupied a key site on the High Street for 18 years, shocked residents.

But now the store, which is in the final stages of refurbishment, is scheduled to open its doors again at a date to be confirmed this month.

Store bosses are planning to create new jobs by recruiting up to ten local full and part time staff to work at the premises.

The store will be operated by Preston-based G&E Murgatroyd Limited, the retail division of James Hall, under the familiar Spar banner.

A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to be returning to accommodate local people’s demands. We have had a lot of requests from shoppers.

“We are planning to meet potential staff and interested parties are being invited to complete employment applications as soon as possible.”

The announcement ends months of speculation and rumours surrounding the store’s future and was welcomed by locals.

OMBC Cllr John McCann, said: “It’s great news for Uppermill as a local shop returns giving work to the local community.

“It also offers and greater choice to residents and the store has its own parking. We look forwards to an early opening.”

Pam Byrne, a founder member and former chair of the Saddleworth Business Association, said: “Spar’s arrival means the community will have more shops offering a greater and wider variety of choice.

“The store will also mean more business at that end of Uppermill, making it ideal for locals and visitors.”

At Warburton Court retirement development, opposite the store, more than 60 residents will once more be able to cross High Street to pick up groceries.

The house manager, who did not want to be named, said: “The store’s closure had  a big impact on residents.

“Now everyone is delighted the convenience for them to walk out their door for bread or milk is returning.

“It takes away their independence if they have to rely on family and friends to bring them things.”
