Wonderful Whit Friday approaches

Cornet player and brass tutor Mark Rodgers gives us an insight into the band world with his column, Brassed Off.

IF I were to be lazy this month, I could just condense this column into one simple sentence – Whit Friday in Saddleworth really is a uniquely special day.

Our ‘big day’ is an important date in the calendars of our churches. The spectacular processions of witness uphold traditions of worship that reach back to the 1800s. The first few days of June will be those of preparation, of the banners, flowers and new outfits which are all synonymous with the walks.

Our bands will have started their preparations too, both for the morning events and the evening of contesting. Players will have arranged time off work, college or school (or at least thought of the mystery illness that will befall them that day) and coaches will be booked.

Throughout May the anticipation will have grown as contest marches will have filtered into rehearsal repertoires. Most bands will sample a few pieces and consider their musical strengths or weaknesses until the most suitable choice is made for the evening of contesting.

Sometimes it is a little simpler – more along the lines of ‘“We’ve played such-a-piece for thirty years and even though we’ve won nowt on it, we’ll give it another crack!”

The thought of being excited about marching around several villages, performing a physically demanding piece each time and being herded on and off a coach all night is absurd – but this is Whit Friday and it has that unique magic.

There are the obvious local rivalries to battle out but also an opportunity to turn the tables on some of the ‘big boys’ of banding, these special moments do happen. There is also the chance to meet old friends, even if it is just a fleeting ‘Hiya, nice to see you again!’. Your band’s camaraderie grows as the night goes on, despite tired lips, fingers and brains.

The contests are easily the world’s largest annual brass band event. Nowhere else can boast of well over a hundred bands, all competing in one district on one single evening.

From the humble beginnings of friendly rivalry between the bands that played for the processions, the contests have grown into something of a global phenomenon. Speak to an Australian brass musician and mention Saddleworth, their response will no doubt include the words Whit Friday.

I hope all worshippers, visitors and of course musicians have a great day and the weather sings from the right hymn sheet.
